This piece can be written in mode 5 with final C instead of the common final F
(see table at the top of this page).- As the melody is not always written for each verse, I underline any syllable on double note (podatus, clivis), it helps a lot!

Vespers hymn for the Feast of the
Most Holy Name of Jesus. There is a different opinion regarding the last note D on the "a" of memoria: both Liber Usualis and Parish Book of Chant (as well as Antiphonale Romanum) do not show any rhythmic sign but the Mass & Vespers and Liber Brevior have an episema on this note. The singer on the first video shows an interpretation without any pause or lengthening. |

Elle célèbre dans la troisième strophe les miracles accomplis près de son tombeau, qui fut au Moyen Age un des plus célèbres lieux de pélerinage. ». For those who do not read French: « The hymn Iste Confessor (of a Confessor Bishop) is the proper hymn for St Martin (11 Nov). Through the 3rd paragraph it celebrates the miracles accomplished near his tomb, which was one of the most famous places of pilgrimage during Middle Age. » |

Vespers hymn for Immaculate Conception and Assumption. The name Mary is said to mean "Star of the Sea" = stella maris. The first verse is said kneeling. There is a little mistake on the word semper page 1260 of the Liber Usualis: the notes should be GA, not EA, as indicated by the custos on the previous page. All the other verses are correct. Promises to those who sing Ave maris stella: During a riot at Rome, a mob came to the house where St. Bridget lived; a leader talked of burning Bridget alive. She prayed to Our Lord to know if she should flee to safety. Jesus advised her to stay: "It doesn't matter if they plot Thy death. My power will break the malice of Thy enemies: if Mine Crucified Me, it is because I permitted it." Our Blessed Mother added: "Sing as a group the AVE MARIS STELLA and I'll guard you from every danger." Lovely polyphonic setting: by Grieg. |
